How much does solid oak warp?
I am thinking of purchasing a solid oak bookshelf with drawers. It is rare that furniture is made with solid wood these days because it warps so I am not sure what to except. How much will this cabinet shift over the years?

Actually, solid wood furniture is still used as a sign of quality in expensive furniture. Veneered furniture is cheaper, but also there is less seasonal movement with veneered-covered plywood or particle board. However, all wood will experience seasonal movement. This is defined as the amount of moisture that either evaporates or is “taken in” by wood, according to moisture content in the air. This is a characteristic of wood that has been recognized for centuries. Good furniture is built to allow for this seasonal movement. The shrinkage or expansion is usually very small, and most people don’t notice it.
As I said, furniture is designed to allow such movement, so most furniture that is kept in a steady environment will last for a long time. There is no reason to expect that an oak table for example will eventually break down because it worn out due to moisture related issues. When furniture is exposed to extreme changes in weather (moisture) such as being stored outdoors, it may expand and swell to levels that may affect the integrity of the furniture piece.
If a piece of furniture is kept indoors, the amount of moisture is usually maintained within a certain range, and the wood is fairly stable.
If you keep your cabinet indoors, as someone else pointed out, it should easily outlive you and your children…probably even any grandchildren. As a wood-worker, I have built many projects over the years. Oak is a very stable wood to work with because of its strength, hardness and durability. You would do well to purchase such a piece of furniture because it will last ten times longer than veneered furniture.
