it seems like for singing its either you become a star, or sing as a waitress
Oh yes. There are other vocal things you can so outside of the “popular” world. Most people who are trained singers do a couple of things to eat, and no. You don’t have to be a star to have a solid career.
You can become a classical singer. Most of them are NOT household names, but the pay (especially in classical music) is more consistent. Since you don’t find most people with formal trained ability, they pay well or in some cases more than the average singer. For example, I get paid to sing roles, weddings, oratorio, and in churches. Some churches need section leaders and pay decent each week. You don’t have to pay to go out of town if they want you to leave. I have a friend who is getting paid to sing for an all expensed paid trip to tour Europe in the CHORUS. Yes. there are classical singers who get paid to sing in the chorus and get paid well. So it isn’t all about being seen or number one. It is all about getting a check!!!
Broadway singers can sneek into the church realm too for sight reading, while doing roles. Many broadway singers have a classical background anyway.
Of course, you can become a vocal teacher or coach. Or a chorus teacher/choir director. Some churches pay choir directors full time. They also work as clinicians and adjucators (people who judge choirs).
You can become a backup singer. You will be surprised at how much they pay if you are with the right artist. Luther Vandross paid his back-up singer so well, after she won a Grammy she went back to sing back up for him. Not because she was broke, but because they were willing to pay her that much. They have some serious value and many back up singers singer BETTER than the artist they are backing.
You can sing in Las Vegas or places in that nature and do shows year round. You probably have to sign a contract. Ok it might be cheesy, but at least you will get paid for it!
You can do jingles and voice overs. I had a friend that did that. They also use these people who sing for film soundtracks, etc.
When you get your feet wet in the business, you will get turned on to different jobs. You don’t have to be famous to get paid. I know a man who goes to sing in Europe all the time getting paid WONDERFULLY to do it. No, he isn’t world famous, but his house sure says he is doing well at what he does. If that is what you are asking, it is definitely possible.
