If you are looking to buy a quality pen or maybe even start a collection then you need to know exactly what to look for to ensure that you are getting the right one to suit both you and your writing style.
A quality pen makes a great gift for a loved one or for a colleague that is leaving or retiring. A pen can say a lot about the person that is using it such as personal style and tastes.
Buying Guide
Type of Pen
The first thing to think about is the type of pen that you are going to buy, your options are:
Fountain Pen – This contains a nib and a feed. A fountain pen uses fluid ink to write with and is great for users who have a fluid writing style.
Ballpoint Pen – A ballpoint pen has a rotating ball, which uses gravity to dispense the ink onto the page. A ballpoint pen is ideal for everyday use and is ideal if carried around in a pocket because it has the least chance of leaking.
Rollerball Pen – Rollerball pens are a combination of a fountain and ballpoint pen. They use a roller ball but the ink flows very much in the same way as a fountain pen.
Style of Pen
There are many finishes of pen available all with varying colour schemes. The material the pen is made from is also important as there are many used such as wood, metal (some precious) and plastic.
The type of material and finish will depend upon the price you pay, the more expensive models tend to be made from precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum. These tend to be aimed more at the collectors market but are fantastic luxury gifts.
The style of pen you chose would also depend on the gender of the user, if it were for a female then a slender style pen with a thinner barrel will be suitable or if it is for a male with large hands a broader pen with a thicker barrel would offer higher levels of comfort.
Handwriting Style
The style of handwriting used is an important point to consider especially when buying a rollerball or ballpoint pen. These types of pen generally come with a point size option, which is either fine or medium. A fine point suits someone with small handwriting and a medium suits someone with large handwriting. A fountain pen tends to suits those with a fluid and artistic writing style as the pen allows the ink to flow with ease to complement that style.
Comfort
Comfort is vital if the pen is going to be used for long periods of time such as an author writing a book. The size and barrel of the pen including the grip area determine the comfort.
A user with larger hands would be most comfortable with a wide barrel and grip area so the pressure used to hold the pen is at a minimum. The opposite is then true of a user with smaller hands especially females who require a thinner barrel and grip area which ensure that the pen is kept under control comfortably.
