What is a really good murder mystery party set for teens?
I would like to have a murder mystery party with me and about 7 other people. Does anyone know a good one to use? The age group is 13-15.
There are teen versions of mysteries available here (if you’re worried about appropriate mysteries):
http://www.nightofmystery.com/shop/category/mysteries/clean/
Although, I’ve been part of The Champagne Murders several times (as different characters) and there’s nothing explicit in it, so it would be appropriate, and we had a great time:

Alternatively, if you’re up for a challenge, I’d recommend writing your own mystery. The best murder mystery parties have always been, in my opinion, the ones that have been written with the guests in mind. You know your guests better than a downloaded mystery, so you have the power to create characters for them that are practically their doubles, or world away. Enjoy!

The late Dewey Balfa (who appears in the film’s sweet porch-party scene) is to Cajun… |

A Man Lay Dead $12.71 Ngaio Marsh was one of the queens (she has been called the empress) of England’s Golden Age of mystery fiction. And in true Golden Age fashion, her oeuvre opens with, yes, a country-house party between the two world wars – servants bustling, gin flowing, the gentlemen in dinner jackets, the ladies all slink and smolder. Even more delicious: The host, Sir Hubert Handesley, has invented a new and especially exciting version of that beloved parlor entertainment, The Murder Game. |

A Toast to Tomorrow $12.71 Book Sense March 2008 Notable Book Pick. Joseph Goebbels is fuming. It’s the mid-1930s and the Nazi Minister of Propoganda has a nice little racket going. He and his cohorts are allowing Jews to slip out of Germany in return for 80 percent of their assets. But longtime Nazi party member Klaus Lehmann, the Chief of the German Police, is too much of a prig to let him get away with it. And given that Lehman was one of Hitler’s earliest supporters, he’s virtually untouchable. In the meantime, British Intelligence is going around in circles. Someone in Germany is sending them messages in a code that hasn’t been used since World War I. When it was first published in 1941 in the U.S., A Toast to Tomorrow, along with its predecessor, Drink to Yesterday, was heralded by famed critic Anthony Boucher as “a single long and magnificent novel of drama, intrigue and humor.” |

A Wicked Deed $7.67 Matthew Bartholomew, doctor of medicine and fellow of Michaelhouse, Cambridge, is traveling with a party from the college to accept the gift of a parish church in Suffolk. But when the benefactor begins to unduly rush the deed to legalize the transfer, Bartholomew senses that Suffolk is not the tranquil retreat that he had been led to believe. And when Michaelhouse’s student priest is found murdered in the church that was to become his living, Bartholomew realizes that he and his party are threatened by dark forces within the village. Compelled to investigate, he descends into a nightmarish world of superstition and heresy. |

Match wits with the master in this full-course banquet of mystery involving a country-house game of murder turned real (“Dead Man’s Folly”), a movie star turned amateur detective (“Murder In Three Acts”), and a dinner party turned deadly (“Thirteen At Dinner”). Bon appetit!. |

An Offer from a Gentleman $5.59 With her trademark wit and seductive, sensuous stories, nationally bestselling author JULIA QUINN entices us once more into a world of passion and the promise of fairy tale romance. Sophie Beckett never dreamed she’d be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton’s famed masquerade ball — or that “Prince Charming” would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight. Who was that extraordinary woman? Ever since that magical night, a radiant vision in silver has blinded Benedict to the attractions of any other — except, perhaps, this alluring and oddly familiar beauty dressed in housemaid’s garb whom he feels compelled to rescue from a most disagreeable situation. He has sworn to find and wed his mystery miss, but this breathtaking maid makes him weak with wanting her. Yet, if he offers her his heart, will Benedict sacrifice his only chance for a fairy tale love? |

Blotto, Twinks and the Dead Dowager Duchess: Blotto, Twinks #2 $12.71 Hurrah for the return of that intrepid duo: Blotto (handsome, honorable, not the sharpest knife in the drawer), and his sister Twinks (just a bit brainier than a girl should be)! As this is the 1920s, they are of course attending a weekend house party, where – how astonishing! – a murder is announced. One of the guests has the gall to accuse Corky, the siblings’ family chauffeur, so Blotto and Twinks have no choice but to find the real murderer and clear Corky’s good name. And also, you know, keep Corky from hanging and so on. Their sleuthing will take them to an opium den, a crumbling Scottish castle, and – most thrillingly – the headquarters of the evil League of the Crimson Hand |

China: Centuries Of Mystery $7.96 China is one of the world’s oldest civilizations, dating back over 5000 years. It is the most populated country in the world. Around a fifth of the world’s population (over 1 billion people) resides in China. Rich in history, culture and global arts, China is a world global leader. It was here that the art of printing was first invented. Gunpowder was first made and used in Chinese weaponry. Other notable inventions were the wheelbarrow, cast iron, the iron plough, the suspension bridge, the parachute, compass, matches, raised relief maps, the propeller, the cross bow and the cannon. The first dynasty in China was named Xia and it was considered mythical until recent excavations. The first emperor of China was the ruthless Shi Huang-Ti. He was responsible for beginning construction of China’s most famous historical landmark, the Great Wall, as protection against barbarian invaders. The Wall also increased China’s isolation from Western civilization, for better or worse. A series of dynasties followed; the most famous of which was the Yuan Dynasty, formed by the fearsome Mongol warlord Kublai Khan. At the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1947, constitutional rule was established, with the Communist Party of China controlling Mainland China. Mao Zedong led the Communist Party of China. Today, China is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s leading economic, political and military superpowers. A fascinating program exploring this proud, ancient, and mysterious civilization. |

Dubliners $6.44 “Don’t you think there is a certain resemblance between the mystery of the Mass and what I am trying to do?…To give people some kind of intellectual pleasure or spiritual enjoyment by converting the bread of everyday life into something that has a permanent artistic life of its own.” — James Joyce, in a letter to his brother With these fifteen stories James Joyce reinvented the art of fiction, using a scrupulous, deadpan realism to convey truths that were at once blasphemous and sacramental. Whether writing about the death of a fallen priest (“The Sisters”), the petty sexual and fiscal machinations of “Two Gallants,” or of the Christmas party at which an uprooted intellectual discovers just how little he really knows about his wife (“The Dead”), Joyce takes narrative places it had never been before. The text of this edition has been newly edited by Hans Walter Gabler and Walter Hettche and is followed by a new afterword, chronology, and bibliography by John S. Kelly. Also included in a special appendix are the original versions of three stories as well as Joyce’s long-suppressed Preface to Dubliners. |

Get Low (Widescreen) $14.96 “Get Low” is inspired by the true story of Felix “Bush” Breazeale, who attracted national attention and the largest crowd to assemble up to that date when threw himself a living funeral party in 1938 in Roane County, Tennessee. For years, townsfolk have been terrified of the backwoods recluse known as Felix Bush (Robert Duvall). People say he’s done all manner of unspeakable things – that he’s killed in cold blood, that he’s in league with the Devil; that he has strange powers – and they avoid him like the plague. Then, one day, Felix rides to town with a shotgun and a wad of cash, saying he wants to buy a funeral. It’s not your usual funeral for the dead that Felix wants. On the contrary, he wants a living funeral, in which anyone who ever heard a story about him will come to tell it, while he takes it all in. Sensing a big payday in the offing, fast-talking funeral home owner Frank Quinn (Bill Murray) enlists his gentlemanly young apprentice, Buddy Robinson (Lucas Black), to win over Felix’s business. Buddy is no stranger to Felix’s dark reputation, but what he discovers is that behind Felix’s surreal plan lies a very real and long-held secret that he must get out. As the funeral approaches, the mystery which involves the widow Mattie Darrow (Sissy Spacek), the only person in town who ever got close to Felix, and the Illinois preacher Charlie Jackson (Bill Cobbs), who refuses to speak at his former friend’s funeral, only deepens. But on the big day, Felix is in now mood to listen to other people spinning made-up anecdotes about him. This time, he’s the one who is going to do the telling about why he has been hiding out in the woods. Lenin: A Biography $18.51 LENIN: His politics still reverberate around the world even after the end of the USSR. His name elicits revulsion and reverence. And yet Lenin the man remains largely a mystery. This biography shows us Lenin as we have never seen him, in his full complexity as revolutionary, political leader, thinker, and private person. Born Vladimir Illich Ulyanov in 1870, the son of a schools inspector and a doctor’s daughter, Lenin was to become the greatest single force in the Soviet revolution — and perhaps the most influential politician of the twentieth century. Drawing on sources only recently discovered, Robert Service explores the social, cultural, and political catalysts for Lenin’s explosion into global prominence. His book gives us the vast panorama of Russia in that awesome vortex of change from tsarism’s collapse to the establishment of the communist one-party state. Through the prism of Lenin’s career Service focuses on dictatorship, the Marxist revolutionary dream, civil war, and inter-war European politics. And we are shown how Lenin, despite the hardships he inflicted, was widely mourned after his death in 1924. Robert Service’s Lenin is a political colossus but also a believable human being. This biography stresses the importance of his supportive family and of its ethnic and cultural background. Service examines his education, upbringing, and the troubles of his early life to explain the emergence of a rebel whose devotion to destruction proved greater than his love for the ‘proletariat’ he supposedly served. We are enabled to see how his intellectual preoccupations and inner rage underwent volatile interaction and propelled his career from young Marxist activist to founder ofthe communist party and the Soviet state — and how he bequeathed to Russia a legacy of political oppression and social intimidation that has yet to be expunged. |
