Kirstens Cat
What do the lyrics to the Cure’s song “All Cats are Grey” mean?

I am curious what the lyrics to this song mean? The song is from the movie, Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst. I love this song, but the lyrics are quite sad and gloomy. Here they are, if you had not heard them before:

i never thought that i would find myself
in bed amongst the stones
the columns are all men
begging to crush me
no shapes sail on the dark deep lakes
and no flags wave me home

in the caves
all cats are grey
in the caves
the textures coat my skin
in the death cell
a single note
rings on and on and on…

One of my favorite songs by my favorite band!!! I think Robert Smith was writing about a typical theme for him: hopelessness and despondency. Reading the lyrics above it may also be about someone who has died (“in bed amongst the stones”) with no glory (“no flags wave me home”). Most of “Faith” is basically the same idea. (Btw, did you notice the simlarity between the theme from “Twin Peaks” and “Funeral Party”)? If you’re interested, I reviewed every Cure album on Amazon.com under the nickname “trainreader.”

Marie Antoinette may be a period film, but don’t expect minuets: Sofia Coppola’s candy-colored portrait of the doomed queen moves to a punk beat. Whatever you think of how that approach works in the movie itself, it makes for a bracing two-CD soundtrack that’s like a mix tape put together by a DJ particularly attuned to the tastes of 2006, not 1786. A dominant chunk of the selection is made up of …
