How would you address an 18th century French noble?
Let’s say, you’re in Paris and you’re a Duc or a Comte or something, and you go to some shop to get a new pair of shoes. I’d expect the storekeeper would already know you and be very respectful, but what would he call you? Would he keep repeating “Comte” like the modern “Sir,” or would he be all “Monsieur” all of the time? Because I know Monsieur is relatively modern as well.
Also, I’m aiming at late 18th century, just before the revolution, but if you have any information at all, it doesn’t really matter.
Yes, you have to add the title after “Monsieur” or Madame”…
Monsieur le comte, Madame la Contesse, Monsieur le Duc, Madame la Duchesse…
Also, before the Revolution, the third person was used even for oneself. Like the King would not say “I” but “The King” and then use the third person.
The storekeeper would also have to use the third person. Like saying “Monsieur le Comte aime-t-il cette paire de chaussures?” (Does Mister the Count like this pair of shoes…litterally).
