Really simple sewing patterns for girls – ABSOLUTE beginners?
Hi, I’ve asked sth. similar like this before and got a great link to a girl’s dirndl skirt – which I managed to successfully sew twice so far – BUT I’m running out of ideas and I absolutely cannot find anything REALLY simple to sew. Even the (supposedly) most basic things turn out to be really time-consuming as I’ve no previous experience (and can’t attend a sewing class right now)
Aren’t there any other REALLY SIMPLE things (for little girls) to sew – besides a dirndl skirt and a string bag?
No idea if this would work, but I though doing another type of skirt (wrap skirt, long skirt) OR maybe a (reversible?) vest, OR a messenger bag/backpack OR a simple dress could be doable – but I just can’t find any simple patterns & instructions – anything I’ve seen so far looks really complicated and comes with a lot of extras which I cannot reproduce..
Help, please?????!!!????
If you’re trying to sew from freebies on the web, be aware that most of them are not of good quality, and mostly lack decent instructions. Some suffer from instructions that actually makes the sewing more difficult. One of the few that does write good patterns is Nancy Restuccia; here’s her basic tote bag:
http://www.mckennalinn.com/Tote.pdf The book that is taken from is called “Hold it!” and should be available from local libraries, though it may need to come by interlibrary loan. Lots of good projects in that book.
Wrap skirts, though they seem easy, are actually a little more difficult to get to hang correctly. so I’d steer you away from those. Backpacks typically have zippered pockets, so make sure you’ve mastered basic zippers before diving into those. Vests are quite simple, particularly when made from fleece. In fact, MacPhee in Canada has a couple of “world’s simplest” patterns that are pretty good:

But in the long run, you’re probably going to want to start using commercial patterns. The ones I like best for beginners are KwikSew’s Kwik Start series: http://www.kwiksew.com/Catalog/cat_thumbs.cfm?Cat=Learn_to_Sew&Level=KWIK_Start&QL=KwikStart

I’m also going to suggest a DVD for you: Connie Crawford’s Studio Sewing Skills, which is basic sewing, starting with learning to thread a machine, lay out a pattern properly and cut it out, and do all the basic steps of garment construction. The project garment in that one is a misses’ camp shirt — KwikSew has several kids campshirt patterns.
